MB's Sumo Banzuke Introduction
Welcome to a homepage focussing predominantly on sumo banzuke / tegata and other sumo related odds 'n' ends.
Banzuke are the ranking sheets on which all of the approximately 600 rikishi (wrestlers) and connected sumo association staff are listed every two months. They are released around a fortnight prior to each of the six annual hon-basho (tournaments) held in Japan during each of the odd-numbered months. The calligraphy style written banzuke has been around in one form or another since 1757 and continues to function as a public notice of any given rikishi's ranking for the upcoming basho - both for the rikishi themselves and also the Japanese and increasingly international sumo following public.
Tegata on the other hand are essentially the hand prints of the sport's very best rikishi and are a form of autograph in both their own right and the fact that each is signed in kanji characters by the rikishi themselves. Tegata come in print form or original. The print form is a replica of the original.
Of these banzuke / tegata and other goods, many items are difficult to obtain easily so feel free to contact MB if anything in particular is sought.
